Today is World Teachers Day...so to all my colleagues the world over who toil daily over many hours to give our learners a fighting chance at a meaningful adult life, I salute your many efforts, your sacrifice of family and social time and your never failing optimism despite the odds.
Yesterday I was conducting the performance review of one of your school managers. One hour into the engagement, a polite knock-on-the-door of the office, heralded a call for the Review Panel to come to the staff room. We duly obliged. And what a surprise!
The public service staff of the school arranged a "tea and cake" event to celebrate and affirm their educator colleagues. A short speech by the Caretaker was followed by a laminated message handover to every teacher. It was a moving moment for everyone... an unexpected gesture.
Alexander, Rooi, Bailey, Lionel, Carmen and Danster conveyed the following to their colleagues:
"Thank you for your excellent service in all areas of work at school and away...for your love and care towards our children...for lovingly going the extra mile and giving them courage to face their challenges...for making them feel safe and happy at school...for never giving up being good to our children".
Happy World Teachers Day everyone!
