Did you know that 1/8 people across the globe go to sleep hungry? That over 870 million people worldwide are chronically undernourished? That the number of hungry people in Africa is on-the-rise (175m to 239m) opposed to Asia and South America that have declining numbers? That malnutrition is a serious problem in South Africa and is one of the biggest contributors to childhood illness and death? That an estimated 30% of South African children are stunted from a lack of adequate nutrition in the early years of their lives?
Do you know, juxtaposed to the malnutrition stats, the world has over 1.4 billion people that are obese, overweight and suffering from non-communicable diseases? A double whammy in terms of the cost to restore health across the globe.
The Western Cape Education Department budgeted R244m to feed learners across the province in 2012/13. Some 432 000 learners were fed over the period in 1021/1500 schools. For many of the learners targeted for feeding, the school-provided meal is often the only sustenance they receive for the day. It is a critical intervention.
October is World Hunger Month, bringing a special focus to this debilitating issue. We can arrest this issue if we all make a daily contribution to the fight against poverty. I can't prescribe what you can or should do, but you must do something, whether at work, school, your social circle or family environment.
