Last night a very excited school manager contacted me to ask me to avail myself for a meeting with a potential partner of the institution. Not much detail was shared, other than asking me for 30 minutes for an exchange over coffee. I duly obliged.
This morning I met with the school manager, Andre and Zoleka, the country programme manager of Infinite Family. So who is Infinite Family and why do they want to become involved with Steenberg high?
The NGO is involved in distance mentoring of students. Adult mentors assist students via a face-to-face platform over the Internet. The mentors are South African based and some are based as far afield as New York. They commit to connect with designated students for a minimum period of one year. Mentors assist students with academics and life skills over a specified curriculum. A tracking system is used to gather feedback, monitor attitudinal change and help mentees achieve self reliance in the longer term.
Steenberg high has been identified as an ideal arena to expand the programme's footprint in South Africa, given its energized environment over a number of areas. In exploratory talks with the teachers, governors and management, the first steps have been taken and the next steps defined.
We look forward to the official launch of this initiative and its outcomes as it contributes to the holistic development of the targeted students.
Andre often reminds us that students who attend his school are called "Steenbergers". We look forward to seeing the next crop of "Steenbergers" flourishing after completing their high school experience.
