Lights, Camera, Action....the traditional introduction to any filming or theatre production...but not at this event!
At the City Hall last night a cacophony of sound (audience noise, cocktail speeches, vagrants issuing instructions, car guard jostling, traffic exiting the City Centre) heralded the start of an exciting evening of dance, drama and singing...the Circuit 1 Arts and Dance Festival in association with Safer Schools.
A few 100 learner performers formed the spine of the program. And they kept us riveted throughout the 120 minutes of the event schedule. But the success of this event had many strands - and the audience was just as important as the stage entourage.
Some 800 tickets were on offer at a measly price. The idea was not to generate money but encourage attendance. It worked! Parents, Guardians, "Oumas and Oupas" pitched in their numbers courtesy of transport arranged by the many schools in attendance. We started at 19h00 with a hall filled with expectancy. We ended at 21h15 with a hall filled with deep pride and satisfaction - a perfect evening, where children, parents, community, local and provincial government combined to show what education can deliver ... Holistic development of kids and an opportunity for unbridled expression of what's possible.
